One Second Too Late

by Maria Cabrera

Most days feel like everything is too much. The weight of the world is on top of me, like a bowling ball knocking down the pins. No matter how hard I try to push it away, it just stays. I wake up exhausted, even though I sleep so much. My mind races with everything that I can't seem to fix. It's like I'm trapped in a room I can't escape.

I'm trying so hard to fight it, but most days, it feels like I'm losing. I've convinced myself that the world would be better without me. The pain is so loud in my head, and I just don't know how to stop it. I tell myself that if I could just go, the hurt would end.

I thought that maybe if I just left, the hurt would be over for everyone, including me. It would all be over. I wanted to cry, but the tears wouldn't come. My heart felt like Godzilla was ripping it apart. This is the end of my fight, the end of this never-ending struggle.

Then I heard my mom call my name and say that dinner was ready. She made my favourite, picadillo with platanitos maduros. She even added the potatoes just the way I like them. I could already smell it on my plate.

I started to regret everything. I have to live for my parents, for my future kids, and for myself. What have I done?

Everything went blank. I felt... nothing. No peace. Just a cold emptiness, and I realised how much I was about to lose. I realised how much my loved ones would lose.

It was too late. I couldn't undo it. I couldn't take it back. The only feeling that filled my breathless soul was that I didn't want to die. I just wanted the pain to stop.

I never thought about what I would leave behind. I never thought about how my family would feel or how my friends would be torn apart. I never thought about the future I would never get to see, or the things I would never experience. My grandparents would lose their little princess, and my dad wouldn't be able to interrogate my first boyfriend like he always said he would. My mom wouldn't give me the "weird talk" that I'd act like I knew nothing about.

I thought I was making it stop, but all I did was make it worse. The regret is crushing my soul. The life I could have had... all of it, gone in a moment of desperation. Now I feel nothing. No thoughts, no feelings, nothing. I don't know where I'm going, but I hope I don't struggle as I did back then.

Please don't do it. My daughter is gone now, but you don't have to be. Even when the pain feels unbearable, don't make the same mistake she did. You'll regret it more than you can imagine. Please, hold on.
