School uniforms have been an integral part of education since 16th-century England, but after five centuries, many schools are reconsidering whether uniforms are still necessary.

Modern school uniforms originated in 1552 at Christ’s Hospital in London, a school initially created to care for and educate “poor and fatherless children.” According to the Christ’s Hospital website, the uniform, a distinctive blue coat with yellow socks, not only served the purpose of identifying students of the school from other schools, but it also served a practical purpose due to the relatively low cost of manufacturing yellow and blue garments. During that time, blue and yellow were readily available and were low-cost, making them a good choice for the school uniform.

Since then, uniforms have been a staple of education in many parts of the world. Schools have since justified uniforms using a variety of reasons other than identification and cost, such as fostering a sense of community or as a safety measure.

By mandating a school uniform for all students, all students look the same. As such, students have one less thing to think about when coming to school, and it also reduces the notion of status or fame at the school. This is also a common tactic in the military, whereby having the same look as fellow candidates fosters a sense of camaraderie and removes any bias that may come from what they wear. Another justification for uniforms is that they prepare students for their future professional lives. Many workplaces expect their workers to dress a certain way to demonstrate professionalism. Another reason school uniforms are needed is student safety. By wearing a school uniform, the frequency of crimes such as vandalism and assault decreased by 34% and 18%, respectively, in Long Beach, California, according to Britannica and SmartAsset.

For those who do not think a school uniform is necessary, they refute the arguments mentioned above as irrelevant. While uniforms make students look alike, removing the notion of status and wealth, students’ hairstyles, phones, and shoes are still indicators of it. In addition, schools may charge high prices for their uniforms, which causes low-income families to buy fewer uniforms than high-income families. After a certain period of time, it can become evident which students come from low-income families by noticing damage to their clothes. David L. Brunsma notes, “It only takes two months for socioeconomic differences to show up again.”

Regarding student safety, while some studies show that wearing a school uniform may decrease violent crimes such as assault and vandalism, some studies indicate the contrary. According to Britannica, school uniforms caused increases in violence in the most violent schools.

In any case, studies are mixed and show no true benefit in wearing school uniforms. While school uniforms are a good choice in some schools, they may not be suitable for others. A majority of justifications by schools could indeed be solved by focusing on other aspects of school, such as creating an environment where students can find friends and become contributors not only to schools but to society as a whole.
